Super Fast Baby Quilt (Using the Scrappy Trip Method)

"Scrappy Trip Around the World" is a quilt pattern that, as far as I can tell, originates here. It uses a very unique piecing method involving unpicking seams (on purpose!). It's a great way to use scraps, and delightful to see how the different patterns emerge as you go. I am making a classic "Scrappy Trip" right now, you can see my progress on Instagram @woodberry_way (#marquittascrappytrip).

I received a quilt order for twins this week that needed to be finished rather quickly, so I thought I'd use this method to save time, and it worked wonderfully. I've created this tutorial with very beginning quilters in mind.

Supplies:

12 different 1/4 yard cuts in coordinating prints (I used Cottage Garden by The Quilted Fish, plus some blenders.)
1/2 yd for binding
1 1/2 yds for backing
You will also need your trusty seam ripper:)

1. Cut strips to 4.5" by WOF. (You can technically make two of these quilts out of 1/4 yd cuts, if your cuts are very careful and straight.) You should have 12 strips, one of each print.

2. Arrange the the strips however you'd like. I do this on the ironing board because I have little fabric stompers at my house. You can blend the colors to achieve an ombre look, or go for high contrast with distinct stripes. The stripes you see here will be the same as the diagonal stripes in the end. Also, keep in mind that the top and bottom rows will touch eventually, so make sure you like the way they look together.

You can see here I arranged the colors with two different results in mind- one with blended colors and one with contrasting.

3. Sew strips together.

You'll have what could be a simple striped quilt top. Don't trim it yet! The fabric widths vary depending on manufacturer, and that's alright.

4. Press seams, alternating the direction on every row. This will ensure that your seams nest in the end, making it much easier to match up corners.

5. Fold in half, right sides together, and sew the top and bottom strip together. You will create a tube of strips. You can see I don't fuss about threads until the end.

6. Lay the "tube" flat, and cut perpendicularly into 4.5" strips. I fold it in half again for easier cutting, just make sure it's lined up! You should have 9 tube strips.

7. Take a tube strip and unpick one of the seams. Keep in mind that wherever you start unpicking will determine which print will start the pattern in the upper corner. Lay that strip flat.

8. Determine which seam needs to be unpicked in the second row by looking at the first two prints of your first flat strip. Unpick the seam between those two first prints. When you lay this one next to the first you will see that the prints have all shifted over one spot. Continue to do this, laying them out with the first color from the last row in the last spot on the next, and you will see the diagonal stripes emerge. (You can see I have highly qualified help!)

*Note: You can't rotate the layout (like in the original Scrappy Trip block) unless you reduce the pattern to a 9 by 9 grid. It will only work with a square layout. I highly recommend trying that too, it's super fun!

9. Sew your strips together, "nesting" the seams as you go. As you put your strips right sides together to join them, you'll see that the seams you ironed will alternate, making them easy to tuck into each other as you go. This eliminates the need to pin, and you can feel that the seams are lined up perfectly, making perfect corner points. Press your rows all one direction and trim any threads.

Voila! You have a lovely 36" by 48" quilt top ready to go-  the perfect baby size. Layer, baste, and bind with your favorite method. There are lots of wonderful tutorials out there for these steps if you are still learning.

Thank you for following along, have fun sewing!

Flag Jars

I can check this off my project to-do list. You just have to imagine flowers in the jars though. (Those cost money so they are coming later.)  All in all these were pretty cheap to make. Now I can use this decoration for Happy Memorial Day/Flag Day/Independence Day/Patirots Day/Any Day...I guess that means all summer long.

Pink and Gold Baby Shower

I found these pictures of a baby shower I threw for a good friend a while back.  The main accomplishment here is that I think I spent $30 total on it.

Here's what I bought:
  • gold spraypaint for frame (that I had already), and flower vases
  • tissue paper for garland on ebay (there are lots of tutorials for those), as well as pink utensils, plates, and gold cupcake liners
  • pink and gold candies
Everything else I had already. The napkin holder is from IKEA, as is the doily plate. I made three different kinds of cake and made little labels for them using tags and toothpicks stuck into Rolo candies. I also made a little print for the frame that said, "Welcome little lady". The cupcakes were Cherry Almond Vanilla and are SO delicious.

It was a really fun party to prepare!

American Girl Matching Ruffle Skirts

I made these as a gift last year and didn't ever take a very good picture of them, but it's a project I'm going to want to come back to and remember and make again! Matching skirts for a girl and her American Girl doll. I used stretchy ruffle fabric and just added a black elastic. No hemming or anything needed, just sew it straight up the back! I would have gone crazy over this when I was little.

*special thanks to Ashley for the gift idea and showing me how to do it back when I could barely sew!

Recovered Kitchen Chairs

Ta Da! New Kitchen Table! Well, sort of...

I recovered our kitchen chairs with TONS of help from my mom! (I was so tired by the end she was practically doing it for me.) But, still I love this long awaited project and that it's finished.

In the short time we've had this table and chairs we've piled on the spills and stains like you wouldn't believe. Eww & Gross. I was embarrassed to have company sit on them. Sure we have kids, but still you wonder what you're sitting on. Problem solved.... now they are cute AND practical. I covered the chairs with clear vinyl over the fabric. They are a little noisy to sit on but totally worth the easy clean up.

I bought one cut of fabric, enough for two chairs, to try it out at first. When I went back to the store a few days later the whole roll of fabric was gone! Of course it was out of stock online too. I couldn't believe it. Thankfully I traveled to another store in another city and they had the fabric. Phew. Next time I'll get all my project materials at once, just in case.

Christ Centered Easter Ornaments

I searched for some Christ centered Easter DIY decorations and it took awhile to find something I loved. Here's what i made! These ornaments turned out to be really inexpensive too! 7 paint stirring sticks from Home Depot for free. Scrapbook paper, acrylic paint and wire all bought on sale so this project was about $2.50! I thought if i made them ahead of time (about a month ago) I'd for sure get them up by Easter . Nope. Looks like this year's project was making them. Next year's project will be displaying them. Even though these are perfect for Christmas too I purposely used Spring colors so I'd use them for Easter. Next year I'll plan on getting a branch for the mantle or something else to hang them on. The blog Todays Fabulous Finds is where I got these free names of Christ printables and instructions on how to do it.

Crochet Dish Cloths

The first thing I learned to crochet was a dish cloth. (Photograph of my first few attempts still pending. They are funny!) I use 100% cotton from Sugar 'n Cream, and I have found them to be so durable, useful, and pretty. It's just nice to do something that is a drudgery with something pretty! The pattern that I'm really liking right now is a simple HDC all the way through with a J hook. It comes out really soft, and simple. You can wash them a billion times and they still look great. I love them!

2013 Creations

Some creations I made....
I didn't take pictures of all projects but I like putting these all together to see that I have been able to take some time for myself and craft/sew on occasion.

Burlap Circle Wreath

Car Seat Canopy. Bought this fabric 2 years ago. Finally made it. Might at bows later.

Got this Love Plaque idea from here which was inspired from Pottery Barn.
 Materials were easy:
bead board from Home Depot, big craft letters, white paint, sand paper & hot glue.

Just recovered my sewing table stool. I still count it as a project I've made. Been wanting to make it cute for awhile.

Target Practice

I'm counting this as something I made, since I DID mix paint & water and fill up all these. The blue color even needed extra care to be blue. The boys liked their "free" targets.

Pretty Cash Envelopes

I made these envelopes to start anew to stick with the budget. Printed the template from HERE for free using scrapbook paper I just had lying around. Hopefully having pretty envelopes will help me be better. The girl who made the template has an etsy shop with premade ones too. She strings her envelopes all together and keeps them in her wallet but I don't want to carry around every envelope all the time. Yay for a new month to start new goals like this one.

Conference game, Activity Sticks & Pinewood Derby

I went to Staples and color copied and cardstocked this activity from The Friend. We used it during conference to follow along with the speakers. It worked!

I wrote down activities on the sticks and depending on our schedule or Mom's mood, I can say "Choose a blue stick" or "Pick any color." Even though these are mostly activities we do already, choosing them from a magical jar make doing the craft/trip/activity even better!
(I saw this idea used for date ideas on a blog somewhere but tweaked it for my 2 year old)

I was merely the Gluer, not the brains behind these special neckerchief slides. My friend Dawn had me put these beauties together the past 2 Pinewood Derbys. The cub scouts love them.  So cool! I need to catalog this so I can remember to do this 10 years down the road when I am in Cubs. I used the E6000 glue.

Paint Sample Color Books

These are two sided pages I made from free paint samples at Home Depot. Laminated the pages & added a ring. Got the idea from my mom- she made me one first. Perfect party favor for our rainbow themed birthday party last week! Plus- FREE! (well, like 17 cents)

More Crayon Rolls

These are 10x5. Used them as party favors. Yay for using leftover fabric! 8 crayons each.
