I've kept going back and forth about what to do for a bow tie....buy one or make one? With my sewing machine piled deep behind other stuff I was leaning towards purchasing but then I had something specific in mind plus I knew it was easy and I could do it. Well, my inward battle ended in making it myself and I'm so glad I did! It's not perfect by any means but I love it. I see many bow ties in the future. Plus the $0.75 price tag on Valentine sale fabric I bought was nice. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought 1/8 yard of cotton fabric and used a little more than half of it. Some tutorials recommend interfacing but I don't think it needs it. Keep it simple: fabric + Velcro = masterpiece. The tutorial I followed from <i><a href="http://whatdoesshedoallday.com/sewing-baby-bow-tie-2/">What Does She Do All Day?</a></i> (Thanks, Heather) made a slightly larger size bow but I cut mine shorter for a 3 inch finish. Fit the little Mister I made for better. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Most importantly, this little man, who joined us on Thanksgiving Day :)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
(quilt is "Dapper Canon" from Camille Roskelley's book Simplify)</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also finished my Quatrefoil quilt in Hello Darling. I'm sending this one to my sister who</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
lives in Denver. I hope she and her cute kids have lots of good snuggles with it!</div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This hot pad was a fun little quilt along with Pen and Paper Patterns.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(The pattern is free on Craftsy!)</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also started a new Scrappy Trip with Gooseberry fabric by Lella Boutique, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and white contrast, which I am loving. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still have a lot to catch up on here, but this is progress :)</div>

It's been on my list for 3 years, but I finally made Christmas stockings! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9lh6UXg5kDie29Ku_whIC6XIHxNPuYMml_LjMGRmIRUOyQzuDA1I6lJuJ67S4tf5j9S8jEE16CI3Z3m7L9cCWDAQXSXPkq00UoDkqZrw_Msq-gRaekiCxY5NotCCdTCgje7MOHzxf7Q/s1600/stockingcollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9lh6UXg5kDie29Ku_whIC6XIHxNPuYMml_LjMGRmIRUOyQzuDA1I6lJuJ67S4tf5j9S8jEE16CI3Z3m7L9cCWDAQXSXPkq00UoDkqZrw_Msq-gRaekiCxY5NotCCdTCgje7MOHzxf7Q/s640/stockingcollage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And, because I'm pregnant and crazy right now, I made a few extras. You know, just in case! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I couldn't find a pattern that I loved completely, so I drew a template on cardstock and used that. Growing up, my mom made us really big, chunky stockings and I loved it that way. I followed the instructions for putting in a lining and cuff on the<a href="http://cluckclucksew.com/2010/12/tutorial-lined-stocking-with-cuff.html" target="_blank"> Cluck Cluck Sew blog</a> (lots of good stuff there). I used fabric from my stash and had fun choosing different scrappy combos. In my mind there are very distinct "boy" and "girl" stockings here, though both my husband and mother say they're all girly. I'm not sorry at all. I mean, if you can't use ric rac at Christmas, when can you!? </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXrcI5ehFOjw6Z4KpjpcEOtA9phjEdF31qN3cKmMkvt_3MDz42jJ7-3aK1IekQnoTggrD8VCMjggrD0ma6QuMozfaKrMsoPdxCPqF8RMq68UuUt9mRCzyJm1cywr3OznnNxfbTmjaY4A/s1600/stocking.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXrcI5ehFOjw6Z4KpjpcEOtA9phjEdF31qN3cKmMkvt_3MDz42jJ7-3aK1IekQnoTggrD8VCMjggrD0ma6QuMozfaKrMsoPdxCPqF8RMq68UuUt9mRCzyJm1cywr3OznnNxfbTmjaY4A/s640/stocking.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It feels great to have these done and to know that maybe, just maybe, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I won't have to make any more ever again! </div>
Allihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12563091926666004003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6413435156614110721.post-71452570218981625812015-06-13T14:55:00.000-06:002015-06-13T15:02:11.339-06:00"Hello Darling" PillowI found a happy surprise this morning as I was looking for printables for our new house. Let me see if I can explain all the connections here. I was on <a href="http://thesmallseed.com/2015/06/house-of-god-a-house-of-order/" target="_blank">The Small Seed</a>'s blog (a wonderful website if you haven't seen it yet, and you can follow them on IG) when I saw that Katie Sabin did a guest post there. A while back, Katie bought a pillow that I made for a fundraiser to make a memory quilt for a young family in our old church ward who lost their Dad. I was so pleased to see my pillow in her adorable room, on one of my favorite sites! It's also a special pillow because the fabric was not out yet ("Hello Darling" by <a href="http://camilleroskelley.typepad.com/simplify/2015/03/hello-darling.html" target="_blank">Bonnie and Camille</a>) when I made it, but a special friend on IG sent me a charm pack that she somehow magically got early. I love that pillow, but it does look a lot cuter at Katie's house than it would at mine:)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the photo from Small Seed. (It's the patchwork pillow on the left.) </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinBpD1lcI5yAhYfj31_G6OwbxkYw92xEUCNXqAXc93gRWl82w5fSUz11ULdkE4rw2i3I75ztz_UcbJ-QMD15O_qg4om-RG-LO1iMg4vX-a49qj0dUmkYDxoROYaS0DCCvq1FvQjWhynQ/s1600/katie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinBpD1lcI5yAhYfj31_G6OwbxkYw92xEUCNXqAXc93gRWl82w5fSUz11ULdkE4rw2i3I75ztz_UcbJ-QMD15O_qg4om-RG-LO1iMg4vX-a49qj0dUmkYDxoROYaS0DCCvq1FvQjWhynQ/s640/katie.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And by the way, I found that The Small Seed has really great printables, including one from Katie. I printed this one for our new house. I think it's technically a Christmas print, but I like it. <br />

It's Dress Like A Bee Day at school and my suggestion of black clothes with yellow tape stripes or the black shirt/yellow tutu combo got vetoed. So, I picked up a yard of yellow fabric and 3 inch ribbon at Walmart (Only like $8 total...hurray!) It took at most 1.5 hours to make which I think is pretty good for a rookie clothing seamstress. Thanks to <a href="http://www.livingwellspendingless.com/2011/10/11/bee-costume-tutorial-1/">Living Well Spending Less Tutorial</a> this surprise was a success- taking no time and no tears.<br />

Twice a year our family watches our church worldwide conference. <i>(What is General Conference?<a href="http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/what-is-general-conference"> Brief explanation here.</a> )</i> Watching it via internet/roku/tv from the comforts of our home is so great and I try to have one new conference activity for the kids to help them pay attention better. Sometimes a new activity happens, sometimes not, but we have favorites we bring out only for those special conference weekends and repeats are fun too.<br />
<br />
Since I haven't been crafting or creating much, this totally counts- I have my new activity done early and ready for Easter Saturday and Sunday- Book Ring Books! I'm so excited and so are the kids. Two weeks seems way too long to wait.<br />
<br />
The idea is to have a card for each speaker during the four sessions of conference. When that speaker is talking, the kids will put stickers on the back of the speaker card according to their speaking subject. If he/she speaks about Easter, they put the Easter sticker. If he/she focuses on the topics of prayer and families then those two stickers go on the back of that speaker card. Similar activities like this have really helped my kids listen for the mention of those key words and topics.<br />

<br />
How I did it:<br />
I printed off pictures of the first presidency and quorum of the 12 apostles from <a href="http://www.rachaelsbooknook.net/primary-7-lesson-9-jesus-christ-calls-apostles/">Rachael's BookNook</a> that she made. Cutting them all the same size to fit nicely in the book rings meant 3.5 inches by 2 5/8 inches.<br />
<br />
Then I went through past conferences to count how many other speakers there are so I knew how many other cards to add to the books- In April there are usually 11 other speakers. Since we don't know who from the different auxiliaries or the quorum of the Seventy will be speaking we plan on writing the speakers' names on the front of the colored cards and then applying stickers to the back just like our photo cards. The stickers I just copied and pasted from the<a href="https://www.lds.org/media-library/images?lang=eng"> gospel pictures from lds.org</a>. Then printed on sticker paper and cut out- ready to go! Enjoy conference!<br />

"Scrappy Trip Around the World" is a quilt pattern that, as far as I can tell, originates <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/scrappy-trips-around-world.html" target="_blank">here</a>. It uses a very unique piecing method involving unpicking seams (on purpose!). It's a great way to use scraps, and delightful to see how the different patterns emerge as you go. I am making a classic "Scrappy Trip" right now, you can see my progress on Instagram <a href="https://www.instagram.com/woodberry_way/" target="_blank">@woodberry_way</a> (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/marquittascrappytrip/" target="_blank">#marquittascrappytrip</a>). <br />

<br />
I received a quilt order for twins this week that needed to be finished rather quickly, so I thought I'd use this method to save time, and it worked wonderfully. I've created this tutorial with very beginning quilters in mind. <br />
<br />
Supplies:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPl3661tj2IPvR-u7P0THYiCcTgJMDUnl4szuuheE3FXU0Ua4P0X6GqH3M3dxuGMmndCNPidA9X734h8U8tz3O5G38z-rcT8JVR8DOJnf9BOrr8VTlqam_gI420TlXIEGOQdfpXUfxwQ/s1600/tutorial1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPl3661tj2IPvR-u7P0THYiCcTgJMDUnl4szuuheE3FXU0Ua4P0X6GqH3M3dxuGMmndCNPidA9X734h8U8tz3O5G38z-rcT8JVR8DOJnf9BOrr8VTlqam_gI420TlXIEGOQdfpXUfxwQ/s1600/tutorial1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
12 different 1/4 yard cuts in coordinating prints (I used Cottage Garden by The Quilted Fish, plus some blenders.)<br />
1/2 yd for binding<br />
1 1/2 yds for backing<br />
You will also need your trusty seam ripper:) <br />
<br />
1.<b> Cut strips to 4.5" by WOF</b>. (You can technically make two of these quilts out of 1/4 yd cuts, if your cuts are very careful and straight.) You should have 12 strips, one of each print.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNKEVtmtSMvpW_whdzZPt2PWOaiqpSmrz36jtRu9MswKJ68K34g1YTQBszJs7H_cYEM3TRPu2vSLSjPY7rX1Rs9Bms7S7H1WPLTHu7Lg3GZztjh1MVVjCji474HuNj5NP6mVnPSO_jBg/s1600/tutorial2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNKEVtmtSMvpW_whdzZPt2PWOaiqpSmrz36jtRu9MswKJ68K34g1YTQBszJs7H_cYEM3TRPu2vSLSjPY7rX1Rs9Bms7S7H1WPLTHu7Lg3GZztjh1MVVjCji474HuNj5NP6mVnPSO_jBg/s1600/tutorial2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
2. <b>Arrange the the strips however you'd like</b>. I do this on the ironing board because I have little fabric stompers at my house. You can blend the colors to achieve an ombre look, or go for high contrast with distinct stripes. The stripes you see here will be the same as the diagonal stripes in the end. Also, keep in mind that the top and bottom rows will touch eventually, so make sure you like the way they look together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1GpgV0_7h0CjQm0BgVmie6wxhJeC1yDUAn4U9pjNqsJGITyqRK8AUiBxpj5XIkBI5X2wURStigUNbBY1B09u72VMY6ezktRK8x_qYkKt6dsdWGhATgosW4YxLSxxh4pHl_QKgaV3kqQ/s1600/tutorial3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1GpgV0_7h0CjQm0BgVmie6wxhJeC1yDUAn4U9pjNqsJGITyqRK8AUiBxpj5XIkBI5X2wURStigUNbBY1B09u72VMY6ezktRK8x_qYkKt6dsdWGhATgosW4YxLSxxh4pHl_QKgaV3kqQ/s1600/tutorial3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see here I arranged the colors with two different results in mind- one with blended colors and one with contrasting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEZgzSQTBnPypJSdJ0F4brZHvysMCLU0S9wR5JP2_AgeVdTuN2cEskexTFx1r5PTaF3apAsjFeNKr9_2dcnKrAqjSlYikAI46jTH3b7174Fkbb60zm-vkIQmg_MnG50GtzLZSJhebj3Q/s1600/tutorial18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEZgzSQTBnPypJSdJ0F4brZHvysMCLU0S9wR5JP2_AgeVdTuN2cEskexTFx1r5PTaF3apAsjFeNKr9_2dcnKrAqjSlYikAI46jTH3b7174Fkbb60zm-vkIQmg_MnG50GtzLZSJhebj3Q/s1600/tutorial18.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
3. <b>Sew strips together</b>. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnBeFcGUcZozpxXu0Jza4oQZdl8qR7QLCQuudSF4t5Bg4jVZ-y2fG9QZBwnT-mZ2FJmYl3xqjxiVI7-4jhpYxcQ8p8_TAu9pfNzIspDRi2ph4JnzZYFR6oxjn0-4lj4Rcjz0AensPjKg/s1600/tutorial5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnBeFcGUcZozpxXu0Jza4oQZdl8qR7QLCQuudSF4t5Bg4jVZ-y2fG9QZBwnT-mZ2FJmYl3xqjxiVI7-4jhpYxcQ8p8_TAu9pfNzIspDRi2ph4JnzZYFR6oxjn0-4lj4Rcjz0AensPjKg/s1600/tutorial5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You'll have what could be a simple striped quilt top. Don't trim it yet!
The fabric widths vary depending on manufacturer, and that's alright. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivSglNq28JA20Z1DA_TZ34ik9Fyqb6xT8vKRxfs8JmpKetqR_BahxB4vnX-1-DatwXFxDDp3gXDlNsvmntz5ZZ7NALVVxRWipg_zQ0V6CdLb3noApju9BTu2224aIgP80q2duR8VeXwA/s1600/tutorial4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivSglNq28JA20Z1DA_TZ34ik9Fyqb6xT8vKRxfs8JmpKetqR_BahxB4vnX-1-DatwXFxDDp3gXDlNsvmntz5ZZ7NALVVxRWipg_zQ0V6CdLb3noApju9BTu2224aIgP80q2duR8VeXwA/s1600/tutorial4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
4. <b>Press seams, alternating the direction on every row</b>. This will ensure that your seams nest in the end, making it much easier to match up corners.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi64qMjrnbpJVgI9Uz9SOwrO5WTuUhloHBEhosDR8nJJZ6QTmnZrz7v7EkUDVaTFLDR8XW41CKXliqrC-ZBI5sbNtBl_eraVSGJRu4zPjqGYcewqlMMdqaoVO1cB-M4eLMQQLL-C9_mMg/s1600/tutorial6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi64qMjrnbpJVgI9Uz9SOwrO5WTuUhloHBEhosDR8nJJZ6QTmnZrz7v7EkUDVaTFLDR8XW41CKXliqrC-ZBI5sbNtBl_eraVSGJRu4zPjqGYcewqlMMdqaoVO1cB-M4eLMQQLL-C9_mMg/s1600/tutorial6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
5. <b>Fold in half, right sides together, and sew the top and bottom strip together</b>. You will create a tube of strips. You can see I don't fuss about threads until the end.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhige1HAmkaj0eKJd_JiWsRQC5BWMpELN57-JbNX2Gc7rDeOoWk7T-PTHhb2YTmNLbbqdVrsu-yZmP-PK5yhgbciluY3nurmaOGs0EA4IleB_z0n1bLZATO2hZPfyYqo2GBeB5vpOVIkQ/s1600/tutorial7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhige1HAmkaj0eKJd_JiWsRQC5BWMpELN57-JbNX2Gc7rDeOoWk7T-PTHhb2YTmNLbbqdVrsu-yZmP-PK5yhgbciluY3nurmaOGs0EA4IleB_z0n1bLZATO2hZPfyYqo2GBeB5vpOVIkQ/s1600/tutorial7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxT1SJdJJ9FnZ1hHN1BTjrbHfZCskEqzWXmWtZ08x4uyirZMPXjmi3nUQ5xhfHbfZ3u-ZH_XxxrU48U3LJAsY5IeOHE75WkQP49rt_YMkSC-YByUH6ruMiU5naGPQfYWnemAUb1Pq7lA/s1600/tutorial8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxT1SJdJJ9FnZ1hHN1BTjrbHfZCskEqzWXmWtZ08x4uyirZMPXjmi3nUQ5xhfHbfZ3u-ZH_XxxrU48U3LJAsY5IeOHE75WkQP49rt_YMkSC-YByUH6ruMiU5naGPQfYWnemAUb1Pq7lA/s1600/tutorial8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
6. <b>Lay the "tube" flat, and cut perpendicularly into 4.5" strips</b>. I fold it in half again for easier cutting, just make sure it's lined up! You should have 9 tube strips.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeDMcloeUY1jOUcEU1I8h3Iq2c-rSlle-TN0FdffEKkFVb-7RzwgcrhFUBF8rne_hyuFgi4vtEvTa_ZdHD7uWB44cPkK0O32u6TsVsAHfkeQBdhKApBHHbnspx7k-0F47sP6nRv9g6Xw/s1600/tutorial9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeDMcloeUY1jOUcEU1I8h3Iq2c-rSlle-TN0FdffEKkFVb-7RzwgcrhFUBF8rne_hyuFgi4vtEvTa_ZdHD7uWB44cPkK0O32u6TsVsAHfkeQBdhKApBHHbnspx7k-0F47sP6nRv9g6Xw/s1600/tutorial9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSmLxZnCD-gVeU4Ej8QHfuDgjjfdTCx86fV6pGm5k_xchIj1Y4A84agN4WWT6JjhuiPeUzfEeuJkjNJ8YddGbfm6ZhOuQ9c4QwrHUC99sDW9VhRXXHDjBj_-YgHS2U1OSkym6qQTjZLQ/s1600/tutorial10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSmLxZnCD-gVeU4Ej8QHfuDgjjfdTCx86fV6pGm5k_xchIj1Y4A84agN4WWT6JjhuiPeUzfEeuJkjNJ8YddGbfm6ZhOuQ9c4QwrHUC99sDW9VhRXXHDjBj_-YgHS2U1OSkym6qQTjZLQ/s1600/tutorial10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
7. <b>Take a tube strip and unpick <i>one</i> of the seams</b>. Keep in mind that wherever you start unpicking will determine which print will start the pattern in the upper corner. Lay that strip flat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyuYu2KGYSbfdtEeh5nw0y21aI6FJbXI-tbnL-kZTezIW4oPZHy39G_zjYwILs_j_7ywp3aukINMHu0YfRIcLLo8v2do9PFfTkwhkJ89Eq-kOyhntrgcVwPYg5VIYNUIxLNn83cQoJLQ/s1600/tutorial11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyuYu2KGYSbfdtEeh5nw0y21aI6FJbXI-tbnL-kZTezIW4oPZHy39G_zjYwILs_j_7ywp3aukINMHu0YfRIcLLo8v2do9PFfTkwhkJ89Eq-kOyhntrgcVwPYg5VIYNUIxLNn83cQoJLQ/s1600/tutorial11.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
8. Determine which seam needs to be unpicked in the second row by looking at the first two prints of your first flat strip. <b>Unpick the seam between those two first prints</b>.
When you lay this one next to the first you will see that the prints
have all shifted over one spot. Continue to do this, laying them out with the first color from the last row in the last spot on the next, and you will see
the diagonal stripes emerge. (You can see I have highly qualified help!) <br />

<br />
*Note: You can't rotate the layout (like in the original Scrappy Trip block) unless you reduce the pattern to a 9 by 9 grid. It will only work with a square layout. I highly recommend trying that too, it's super fun!<br />
<br />
9. <b>Sew your strips together, "nesting" the seams as you go. </b>As you put your strips right sides together to join them, you'll see that the seams you ironed will alternate, making them easy to tuck into each other as you go. This eliminates the need to pin, and you can feel that the seams are lined up perfectly, making perfect corner points. Press your rows all one direction and trim any threads. <br />

We followed the <a href="http://cluckclucksew.bigcartel.com/product/pdf-pattern-shortcake" target="_blank">Cluck Cluck Sew pattern "Shortcake"</a>, and I did mine out of citrusy colors from my stash. This pattern comes together very quickly, especially if you use Jelly Roll. (I obviously didn't since I used various different lines.) <br />

Since I don't have a little girl at my house, I was going to put this one in <a href="http://marquittashop.storenvy.com/" target="_blank">my shop</a>, but my sweet Mama snagged it before I could even do so. She loves quilts, but hates quilting, so we have a rather mutually beneficial relationship :) I assumed she was going to save it for the next granddaughter that came along, but was thrilled to discover that she placed it on a brand new Jenny Lind crib in a spare room in her house, along with another quilt made by me. She's now ready for visiting grandbabies of either gender, and in the cutest way, if I do say so myself!<br />

The best part is how much he loves it! Seriously, bedtime has been easier because he's eager to jump in and snuggle it. There is nothing more that a quilter mom heart could ask for!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My friend Chandra is a great photographer and recently added newborn photos to her services. She has been borrowing some of my crochet items as props, and she sent me these shots of the cute babes she has photographed wearing my hats, shoes, etc. Can't wait to see more! I also can't wait to get newborn pics of my next baby. And no, that is not an announcement:) </div>

The raw edges on the squares start like this and with each wash get a little more raggedy & cute. You'll have some strings to snip off the first couple washes but after that it's just cute, unfinished edge squares. It was fun to use a fabric glue stick and a Frixion eraseable pen for the first time, too. To make one, there's a little video you can watch at <a href="http://www.thediydish.com/2011/11/how-to-make-an-easy-quilt/">The DIY Dish</a>.<br />

Thanks Alli, for saving me when I was stuck on the binding! I'm embarrassed to say that this finished quilt sat for weeks just waiting for the border since I didn't remember what to do and baby boy kept getting older. I'm really happy that with the color combo and wanted to keep it for myself.Allisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04963689937803246329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6413435156614110721.post-60702386237056244742014-08-25T17:11:00.000-06:002014-08-25T17:13:41.883-06:00Dresses!I ventured into the world of sewing clothes this month. My sister Joanna asked me to make a blessing dress for her daughter Cora. I used the <a href="http://shop.made-by-rae.com/products/geranium-dress" target="_blank">"Geranium Dress" pattern by Made by Rae</a>. It was tricky at first but after a few tries I mostly got the concept. Clothes are tricky! But making little girl clothes is dreamy, and I fully intend to continue:)<br />

I also made her some little crochet shoes. I didn't get to see her on her blessing day, but she's coming up this weekend and I will get to meet the lovely little chub! Thank you Jo for having me do this, it was a delight.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I found a sweet spot in terms of hook size vs. yarn type vs. stitch ratio that produces SUCH a soft squishy blanket. And when you wash it, it gets even softer. I'm kind of sad I didn't have this blanket a year ago when my baby was a baby. It makes the perfect cute little cushion for tummy time, and is very stretchy for swaddling/snuggling. It will be listed in <a href="http://marquittashop.storenvy.com/" target="_blank">my shop</a> tonight, and coming in more colors!<br />

Today is Pioneer Day! Happy Pioneer Day! It's a state holiday in Utah to celebrate the pioneers who reached the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Our family decided we want to make it more of a celebration even if we don't have any parades or fireworks where we live. Hence, bonnets! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've always been intimidated by "the gathering stitch"and was reluctant to attempt but thanks to YouTube I figured it out and I love the poof on these. I used <a href="http://mycottoncreations.blogspot.com/2013/06/pioneer-bonnet-tutorial.html?m=1">a tutorial from My Cotton Creations</a> to make them plus a couple video tutorials. I love that all you need for a child sized bonnet is:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
a fat quarter</div>
<div>
ribbon</div>
<div>
heavy weight interfacing</div>
<div>
elastic</div>

But then again, my life is a major quilt fest, so it's really not surprising. This one was so fun. It's my favorite size and colors. (40 inches square, if you're wondering.) It is super soft, works for girls or boys in my opinion, and I haven't listed it in the shop yet because I am probably going to keep it I love it so much. Also, my niece Molly joined unexpectedly for the photo shoot, so...bonus cute girl!<br />

This one was so much fun, I'm doing another with the same design in different colors. And maybe more after that:) I loved using square quilts for my babies. This one is pretty tiny, and therefore less expensive, if anyone is looking for a great gift for a new little man! I've got only little ladies being born in my life right now, I need to get on that!<br />

I love this quilt because it includes some of the very first fabric I ever got. My mother-in-law took me to an absolutely heavenly quilt shop near her home in Utah and bought the fabric for me. She spoils us! She is also the other Allison's mother-in-law, by the way, and she is pretty great. Anyway, most of this quilt was made from those sweet little prints. (The fabric line is Tasha Noel's "A Simple Life".)<br />

<br />
<br />
When I was little we had a family night chart that was a little wooden house. I couldn't find anything like it already out there so I made one myself. My dad cut the house shape out for me using a pattern I drew.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once a week we do a family night or <a href="https://www.lds.org/topics/family-home-evening">family home evening</a> when nothing else is planned and we all are home together. After dinner our family night usually includes a song, prayer, lesson about a gospel principle or religious topic, closing song and treat. (Last week was about working with/for each other in the family & keeping our home in order which translates to simple job charts for the kids. I'm going crazy trying to pick up everything myself!) I've seen family night charts with "activity" and "treat" as categories but right now we share the responsibility of making the treat and if we have an activity it's usually part of the lesson. Every family member has their own heart (although these pictures don't have the names). What really made this complete was the gloss finishing spray. I love it- It's kinda like laminating a project; it adds the last layer to make everything look better and the colors really pop.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I debuted this family night chart last week and it was a hit! They've asked me the past two days if we can have family night again. </div>

He is supremely unimpressed by it all, and I don't blame him. He's a little boy! So if I ever do make something that he gets excited about, it really makes me happy. This was one of those things. Now when people come over, he invites them to, "Come look at my new room! Mom made it for me." <br />

<br />
The blanket fits perfectly on the IKEA Gulliver bed.<br />
<br />
It takes about 5-10 minutes to do a row, depending how fast you are. So a couple of rows here and there, on car trips, while watching your favorite show, and it's really not so daunting. And the pattern is as simple as they come. It really only consists of a chain and then one stitch- HDC (half double crochet). There are all sorts of tutorials on YouTube. You could really start learning to crochet today and be making this blanket by tomorrow!<br />
<br />
Here is the pattern that I used:<br />
<br />
Materials: <br />
size J crochet hook<br />
Red Heart Super Saver small skein of yarn in 6 colors<br />
(You could use any worsted weight yarn, this kind isn't as soft as some but you can't beat the price.)<br />
<br />
Row 1: Chain 180<br />
Row 2: HDC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC all the way across, chain 2 and turn<br />
Row 3: HDC across, ch 2 and turn (178 stitches)<br />
Rows 4-16: same as row 3<br />
Rows 17-32: repeat rows 2-16 in a new color (switching colors can be scary at first, there are lots of tutorials for that too)<br />
Etc.<br />
<br />
So basically the entire blanket is just HDC stitches, with 16 rows of each color and six colors total, making 98 rows. And that's it!<br />

I can check this off my project to-do list. You just have to imagine flowers in the jars though. (Those cost money so they are coming later.) All in all these were pretty cheap to make. Now I can use this decoration for Happy Memorial Day/Flag Day/Independence Day/Patirots Day/Any Day...I guess that means all summer long.Allisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04963689937803246329noreply@blogger.com0
